So, Susie decided that the Obamas really need our puppy. She has sent two e-mails via the Pres-elect’s website which have both gotten (duh) a form e-mail response. But, she has renewed hope since Barbara Walters, a proud Havanese owner herself, has announced that she has contacted Barack Obama vouching for the perfect fit a Havanese would be for the new First Family. Our own list of Reasons Why the Obamas Need Our Puppy is dutifully outlined below.
REASONS WHY THE OBAMAS NEED OUR PUPPY:
1. Though no dogs are TRULY hypo-allergenic, Havanese fit into those breeds that claim to be. They have hair, not fur, and do not shed any more than the hair that we humans lose in our brushes each morning. So, score one for Malia.
2. They are happy ALL the time. A perfect antidote to a long day of saving the world.
3. They are VERY smart. An intelligent family like the Obamas could not possibly have a dumb dog.
4. Our pup, pictured above, is named Moondance’s Fire in the Sky and nick-named Benjamin (after Benjamin Franklin . . . fire in the sky? . . . lightning? . . . get it?) What a patriotic name for a presidential pooch, though Mr. President-Elect is welcome to change it. I have a feeling he might be partial to “Abe.”
5. Benjamin will be four weeks on Sunday, which means he will be fully weaned and will have a good start on potty-training by the time inauguration day rolls around.
6. Although I know they prefer a rescue dog, I could make an argument that Ben IS a rescue dog. Anybody who has ever had a Havanese knows they will rescue your heart every day.
7. The Havanese breed is the national dog of Cuba (Havana? . . . Havanese? . . . Get it?) and Benjamin’s presence in the White House might play an important role in diplomatic relations with our neighbor to the south.
8. Havanese are known for being able to equally attach to all members of a family, which I think will speak to Mr. Obama’s naturally egalitarian spirit.
9. Havanese bark very little, so there will be no need for him to have security clearance.
10. And last but not least, Havanese are so loving that the odds are slim to none that Benjamin will ever bite a reporter.
If anybody out there has the ear of the President-Elect, put in a good word for us, will ya’?

ok – you DEFINATELY need to send this to President Elect and fam. How could they not?????
he’s got my vote, but then you had me at “awwwwww, just wook at that widdle FACE.”
The only bad thing about if the Obama’s would have gotten a Havanese, is the popularity would soar and puppy mills would pump out even more then they do. I love them being a pseudo-secret, more and more are coming to rescues, from uninformed owners, bad breeders, puppy mill rescues. It is sad. Let me tell you, your pup is adorable!!!
I have to agree with krimmyk. I recently saw some stats from AKC about the most popular breeds of dogs over the years and back in the 90’s the dalmation was very high on the list….remember the release of the live 101 Dalmations with Glen Close as Cruella DeVille? The demand for Dals soared and many ended up in shelters or abandoned when people discovered they weren’t exactly as depicted in the movie…you know, they did things like GROW UP INTO DOGS! I distinctly remember this because I had Dals at the time and people just went nuts over them……I would hate to see the same thing happen to the Havanese and I fear it would be the “Flavor of the Month”. I have to agree with the author though, the Hav would be the perfect dog for the Obamas in my humble opinion. Don’t forget, you can put little bows in their hair and little girls (and big girls too!) looooove that! ha ha!
Krimmyk and lolabelles — In case you revisit this spot, allow me to reassure you that we are breeders of integrity. I, too, am concerned about the puppy mill issue and the problems inherent in a dog becoming “too popular.” We breed for two reasons: One, to improve the quality of the breed, and two, to reduce the need for puppy mills — if there is demand for a breed and breeders of integrity don’t play a part in providing “pets,” then we leave a vacuum that puppy mills will inevitably fill. That being said, we are definitely not trying to “populate the earth” with Havanese. We breed 1-2 litters a year and carefully screen every potential puppy buyer. I am pleased to tell you that the Obamas, of course, did not take our dog, and now they couldn’t have him if they wanted him. He turns out to be the best show dog potential we have bred thus far. He should be on the AKC show circuit in about three months. Watch for Moondance’s Fire In the Sky, AKA Ben!
That’s awesome Deb! You know, my Lola came from a great breeder in Nebraska. I did a lot of research on the breed itself and how to find a responsible breeder. Fortunatly, I scored big on both but it was a time consuming venture…about 6 months of research before the actual purchase. We are considering adding to our herd in the next 12 months or so and I will confess, I am very torn. I am constantly at Petfinder.com looking at Havanese Rescues yet I still frequent my breeders page to see her available puppies as well. I firmly believe there is room for BOTH shelter dogs AND responsible breeders. I suppose I will know where to get our next family member when the time is right……One is often times moved to make the correct decision if you allow God to guide you …..I think we will just know when the right one comes along, irregardless of whether it’s a rescue or another from my breeder…..
Congrats on Ben’s potential! We aren’t into breeding or showing but the idea of it facinates me. My husband used to have Rots that were shown so he has been there before. Sounds like you already have a winner!
Best of luck to you and Ben!!

lolabelles — that’s fantastic. I am all for rescue dogs (I have two myself! A Great Pyrenees mix and an Australian Shepherd mix.) and I think rescuing a Havanese would be the ultimate rescue of all. Good luck to you whichever way you go. Please visit our website http://www.moondancehavanese.com to see our dogs. We don’t have puppies now, but should late summer or so. I’m sure your breeder is a wonderful source/resource, but if we can ever help, just let us know.
