lolabelles -- that's fantastic. I am all for rescue dogs (I have two myself! A Great Pyrenees mix and an Australian Shepherd mix.) and I think rescuing a Havanese would be the ultimate rescue of all. Good luck to you whichever way you go. Please visit our website www.moondancehavanese.com to see our dogs. We don't have puppies now, but should late summer or so. I'm sure your breeder is a wonderful source/resource, but if we can ever help, just let us know.

That's awesome Deb! You know, my Lola came from a great breeder in Nebraska. I did a lot of research on the breed itself and how to find a responsible breeder. Fortunatly, I scored big on both but it was a time consuming venture...about 6 months of research before the actual purchase. We are considering adding to our herd in the next 12 months or so and I will confess, I am very torn. I am constantly at Petfinder.com looking at Havanese Rescues yet I still frequent my breeders page to see her available puppies as well. I firmly believe there is room for BOTH shelter dogs AND responsible breeders. I suppose I will know where to get our next family member when the time is right......One is often times moved to make the correct decision if you allow God to guide you .....I think we will just know when the right one comes along, irregardless of whether it's a rescue or another from my breeder.....

Congrats on Ben's potential! We aren't into breeding or showing but the idea of it facinates me. My husband used to have Rots that were shown so he has been there before. Sounds like you already have a winner!

Best of luck to you and Ben!!

Krimmyk and lolabelles -- In case you revisit this spot, allow me to reassure you that we are breeders of integrity. I, too, am concerned about the puppy mill issue and the problems inherent in a dog becoming "too popular." We breed for two reasons: One, to improve the quality of the breed, and two, to reduce the need for puppy mills -- if there is demand for a breed and breeders of integrity don't play a part in providing "pets," then we leave a vacuum that puppy mills will inevitably fill. That being said, we are definitely not trying to "populate the earth" with Havanese. We breed 1-2 litters a year and carefully screen every potential puppy buyer. I am pleased to tell you that the Obamas, of course, did not take our dog, and now they couldn't have him if they wanted him. He turns out to be the best show dog potential we have bred thus far. He should be on the AKC show circuit in about three months. Watch for Moondance's Fire In the Sky, AKA Ben!

I have to agree with krimmyk. I recently saw some stats from AKC about the most popular breeds of dogs over the years and back in the 90's the dalmation was very high on the list....remember the release of the live 101 Dalmations with Glen Close as Cruella DeVille? The demand for Dals soared and many ended up in shelters or abandoned when people discovered they weren't exactly as depicted in the movie...you know, they did things like GROW UP INTO DOGS! I distinctly remember this because I had Dals at the time and people just went nuts over them......I would hate to see the same thing happen to the Havanese and I fear it would be the "Flavor of the Month". I have to agree with the author though, the Hav would be the perfect dog for the Obamas in my humble opinion. Don't forget, you can put little bows in their hair and little girls (and big girls too!) looooove that! ha ha!

The only bad thing about if the Obama's would have gotten a Havanese, is the popularity would soar and puppy mills would pump out even more then they do. I love them being a pseudo-secret, more and more are coming to rescues, from uninformed owners, bad breeders, puppy mill rescues. It is sad. Let me tell you, your pup is adorable!!!
